Chapter Eight

Morgan’s eyelids were so heavy, she couldn’t open them. She could hear voices, and she could smell antiseptic and gravy—she must be in a hospital. But why? She thought about it for a moment, and then she remembered. The pain. Crawling on the floor. A nice veterinarian.

“Morgan?”

It was Rory’s voice, and she smiled. “Hi,” she slurred, surprised at how hard it was to talk. “I need to tell you something.”

“And I need to tell you something. Who should go first?”

She tried again to open her eyes and was a little more successful this time. Rory sat next to her bed, his tie askew, and he looked really worried. “You can go first.”

“Okay. Well, I owe you a huge apology. If I’d known how sick you were, I wouldn’t have gone anywhere. Alana called me and ripped me a good one, and she was right. I’m so sorry, Morgan. I should have stuck around.”

“But you had that court thingy. How did that go?” It was hard to find the words she wanted to use. Words were hard.

“We postponed and came right back to the house after Alana called.”

“But . . . you need to beat Uncle Gus.”

“And we will. But you’re more important, Morgan.”

“That’s really nice of you.” She flapped her hand at him, and he caught it and squeezed her fingers.

“So what did you want to tell me?”

What did she want to tell him? It was really important. Oh, that’s right. She wanted to tell him she loved him, but the words just wouldn’t come together in her brain. “Leah’s a hostess,” she said at last.

Rory raised an eyebrow. “What?”

“She knows where you keep things, and she’s really helpful. I’m not.”

“You wanted to tell me that Leah’s helpful?”

This just wasn’t going how she had envisioned it. “How about if I take a nap and tell you later?”

Rory chuckled. “I think that’s a good idea.”

“Did I . . . did I have surgery?”

“You sure did. I hope you won’t miss your appendix too much because it’s long gone.”

“Tell it good-bye for me.”

He chuckled again. “Will do.”

* * *

The second time Morgan woke up, it was much easier. The sun was coming through the window at a different angle, and she could tell that at least a couple of hours had passed. She glanced around at the sterile walls and the whiteboard across from her bed that had been decorated with smiley faces and a note that read, “Your nurse is Whitney.”

Rory had dozed off in a chair in the corner, and she smiled at him. His tie had been loosened so far, she wondered why he hadn’t just taken it off. She remembered from when she’d woken up before that they’d postponed their meeting with the judge—dang. Why’d this have to happen right now?

Rory jerked a little in his sleep and then blinked. “Oh, hey,” he said, rubbing his eyes. “How long have you been awake?”

“Just a minute or two. You should go home, Rory—you look exhausted.”

“Naw, I’m good.” He stood up and stretched.
